The earthquakes that took place in Azerbaijan have a positive effect, because in this way the energy is released, head of the Republican Seismological Service Center of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS), Gurban Yetirmishli told Trend on February 3.
He said the earthquakes occurred on February 3 near the Pirgulu settlement, about 15 kilometres in the direction of Azerbaijani Ismailli district.
The first earthquake measuring 3.7 points was recorded at 07:52, while the second one, which measured 3.4 points, occurred at 14:44.
In residential buildings near the earthquakes’ epicentre the tremors measuring three points were felt. The epicentre of the first earthquake was at a depth of 12 kilometres and the second – nine kilometres, both earthquakes had the same source.
Head of the center said that nine smaller jolts occurred between the two earthquakes.
“This shows that there are certain processes. It is very hard to predict an earthquake. But the duration of these tremors is good, because in this case there is a release of energy. It is impossible to say whether they will continue or not,” Yetirmishli stressed.
