Deputy speaker: Azerbaijan uses successful model of fighting against corruption

Corruption exists in all countries and societies. Some societies are indifferent to this problem, while others regard this issue more seriously and enforce the law, Deputy Speaker of the Azerbaijani Parliament Bahar Muradova told Trend on Jan.7.

As a result of the decisive and consistent stance of President Ilham Aliyev, a number of shortcomings that lead to corruption have already been eliminated, according to Muradova.

“Usually countries with rich energy resources frequently face corruption. Although Azerbaijan is an oil country, we were awarded by the relevant UN agency for transparency. State Oil Fund of Azerbaijan was held as an example for the whole world in the sphere of transparency of expenditures. This shows the position of the Azerbaijani state and president of Azerbaijan regarding bureaucracy,” the deputy speaker said.

No one can say that there is no corruption in one or other country, as this problem has affected all countries to greater or lesser extent, according to Muradova.

If there is no political will, then many things in the negative sense can be said about this, but if the political will exists, then positive steps increase. Centers of ASAN Service can be taken as an example. I’m confident that in the future the ASAN Service will not only cover the current spheres, but also the entire activity of the government and society. The ASAN Service is an experiment and it is successful. You can see for yourself that young staff voluntarily work in this structure and consider it their duty to serve the people getting moral satisfaction from it,” Muradova said.

She said that the service’s activities are aimed at eliminating corruption, and this is important for the education of youth.

“Sometimes efforts to correct someone, do not give the needed effect. And in this case we are talking about a generation change. There are people who have not yet defined their position – their own interests or the interests of society. But if there are young people, who consider the society’s interests as close as their own, it means that a new generation is growing up,” Muradova said.

She added that Azerbaijan has chosen the right path. On one hand, this is the prevention, example, and training of personnel who will work in all areas. On the other hand, the Anti-Corruption Department under General Prosecutor’s Office carries out administrative measures in this area, the deputy speaker said.

Muradova went on to say that, the fight against corruption in Azerbaijan is conducted in all directions.

“And each of them gives its own effect. But the new proposed model is more attractive. That is why I believe that the Azerbaijani government has chosen the right path. This path is supported by different countries and international organizations. This indicates the success of Azerbaijani’s model,” Muradova said.

Regarding the income statement, the deputy speaker said that the MPs report all information about the property before elections.

“I believe that everyone should be prepared to submit a declaration in the case of a corresponding requirement of legislation. I think that the relevant authorities will start using this method,” Muradova said.
