Azerbaijan Supreme Court Chairman: “The Supreme Court addressed 4 333 cases last year”

On Friday, Chairman of the Azerbaijan Supreme Court Ramiz Rzayev held a press conference on the results of 2008. He said the Supreme Court’s benches and Plenum addressed 4 333 cases in 2008, APA reports. “651 of them were criminal, 109 – military, 3 217 – civil cases. 315 cases were addressed by the economic bench of the Court and 41 – at the Plenum. Number of addressed cases was increased by 19 percent in 2008 against the results of 2007. The Supreme Court also reviewed the cassation appeals on the decisions and verdicts of appeal courts about 854 persons”, said Rzayev. He said 8 383 of 70 119 cases were addressed in the appeal proceedings and 3 532 appeal decisions were heard in the cassation proceedings. The Supreme Court’s Criminal Bench annulled 8.1 percent of court decisions. “8.9 percent of the court decisions were changed, 0.6 percent was annulled or proceedings on these cases were ended. 75.9 percent of the decisions remained unchangeable”.
Rzayev said the Supreme Court Civil Bench made special decisions on 59 cases it addressed. “31 special decisions were made on the law violations by the executive and local administrative officials and 25 – other officials. Three of the special decisions were related to the judges. One of the decisions was sent to the criminal investigation. One employee of the Interior Ministry was punished”.
Regarding the economic disputes, Rzayev said the Supreme Court received 372 cases in this field. 315 (84.6%) of them were addressed. The Chairman of the Supreme Court made some recommendations to the media representatives. He urged the journalists writing about the court and law system to learn the legal terminology better.
