Deputy Chief of the US Mission to the OSCE Kate Marie Byrnes wants to build a career by criticizing Azerbaijan, deputy chairman of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly Committee on Political Affairs and Security, Azerbaijani MP Azay Guliyev told Trend on Nov.29.

He was commenting on the statement made by Kate Marie Byrnes against Azerbaijan during the meeting of OSCE Permanent Council.

Guliyev said he knows Byrnes only as a person criticizing Azerbaijan. “Apparently, she wants to build a career by criticizing Azerbaijan and therefore she targets the country in the issues related to civil society and human rights.”

The MP believes that Byrnes is doing it purposefully, which is unacceptable. “I don’t remember her criticizing any other country this way. Therefore, it is worth to find out which goals are pursued here.”

The persons stating that Azerbaijan lacks freedom of press can be divided into two categories, according to Guliyev.

He said the first category includes those who don’t have any information about the situation in this sphere in the country and the second category includes those who are aware of the situation.

“The real situation is that the freedom of speech and expression has been fully ensured in Azerbaijan. No one has difficulties in expressing own opinion and position,” the MP said.

“Suffice it to get acquainted with Azerbaijani press, look through the newspapers, browse online newspapers and in general to pay attention to internet resources,” he said. “One can see that everyone writes whatever wants, criticizes and even insults, and none of them is punished for that.”

Guliyev went on to add that those belonging to the second category purposefully make such statements, which means that they pursue certain interests, adding that these persons, instructed by known circles, try to cast shadow on Azerbaijan’s international image.

The MP said all this is systematically controlled from several centers.

“I would advise the international organizations and the countries closely cooperating with Azerbaijan not to come under the influence of such adventurist circles,” he added.
