PACE to discuss Azerbaijan’s democratic institutions

Azerbaijani delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe will leave this night for Strasburg to attend PACE summer session on June 23-27, Samad Seyidov, head of the delegation told APA. He said the session’s agenda included discussions on the report on “Activity of democratic institutions in Azerbaijan”.

Co-rapporteurs of PACE Monitoring Committee Andres Herkel and Eugenia Zivkova prepared draft resolution on the report. Samad Seyidov said Azerbaijan scrutinized the draft resolution. “We have some amendments to this document and some issues need to be changed”.

The draft resolution on “Situation of democratic institutions in Azerbaijan” adopted at the PACE Monitoring Committee’s meeting in Kiev on May 26 said that situation of human rights worsened in Azerbaijan on the eve of elections. The committee demanded immediate release of arrested journalists Ganimat Zahidov, Sakit Zahidov and Eynulla Fatullayev, as well as five persons called as political prisoners.

Situation of democratic institutions in Turkey will also be discussed at the session. Turkish Foreign Minister Ali Babacan was invited to the discussions. The session’s agenda includes the issues of situation in China, situation of European democracy, prevention of Black Sea environmental pollution, increase of women’s role in the contemporary societies, abandon of new-born babies and etc. The issue of democracy in Armenia can be included after that the co-rapporteurs’ report on progress in fulfillment of PACE resolution.
