Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov received on Tuesday a delegation led by Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Iyad Ameen Madani, the Foreign Ministry told APA.
The OIC secretary general began his speech congratulating Azerbaijan on the high-level organizing of the first-ever European Games, expressing confidence that the Islamic Solidarity Games 2017 would be held at the same level.
He praised Azerbaijan’s role as an active OIC member, emphasizing the contributions the country has made to the realization of economic, political, and humanitarian goals of the organization.
In his turn, Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov said Azerbaijan attaches huge importance to its relations with the OIC, mentioning that a favorable atmosphere has emerged for Azerbaijan to further develop bilateral and multilateral relations with the OIC member states.
The minister noted the importance of solidarity among the Ummah, adding the OIC is a crucial mechanism for the discussion and settlement of problems the Islamic world is facing.
The minister said Azerbaijan highly appreciates the position of the OIC which strongly condemns the Armenian aggression and supports the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict within the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Azerbaijan in accordance with the principles of the international law.
Expressing his concern over the growing trend of Islamophobia especially in Europe, the minister said Azerbaijan raises this issue at all levels.
In addition, the sides exchanged views on the mechanisms and priorities of the OIC’s activity, the upcoming high-level events and other issues of mutual interest.
