New stations for earthquake prediction system to be installed in Azerbaijan

The Institute of Cybernetics of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan (NASA) is preparing to install another two stations of the earthquake prediction monitoring system, the head of the Institute’s Innovation and Information Technologies laboratory, Gambar Guliyev told Trend on March 14.

The stations will be installed in the Khachmaz and Zagatala regions of Azerbaijan, according to Guliyev. Currently, seven stations operate in Azerbaijan that can detect abnormal seismic processes, as well as to monitor them. The stations are located on the island of Gum Adasi, Neftchala, Naftalan, Shirvan, Siyazan Gazakh and one station is located in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.

The essence of the plan is to cover as much territory as possible in the republic with these stations to more accurately determine the epicenters of earthquakes.

Currently, operating stations are able to fix abnormal seismic processes 15-20 hours prior to their surface manifestations.

The system provides transmission of seismic acoustic signals directly to the server of the Institute of Cybernetics. High-frequency satellite channels are used for transmission of signals, which allows the institution to conduct more qualitative experiments at a higher level.
