Azerbaijani MP believes that it is necessary to increase the efforts of the international community for fair settlement of the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
Azay Guliyev, the chairman of the Council on the State Support to the Non-Governmental Organizations under the Auspices of the President of Azerbaijan, made the remarks at a meeting with the member of the German Bundestag Committee on Foreign Affairs, Vice-President OSCE Parliament Assembly, Doris Barnett.
Guliyev stressed the importance of creating an atmosphere of trust between the Armenian and Azerbaijani communities of Nagorno-Karabakh.
The Azerbaijani MP also noted the importance of the meeting between representatives of the two communities and asked to support this initiative.
Barnett, in turn, spoke about the friendly relations between Germany and Azerbaijan and noted that parliaments are an important platform in the development of bilateral relations.
She also proposed to holdi a meeting of Azerbaijani and Armenian MPs, adding that the German delegation consisting of 13 deputies will take part at the 23rd annual session of the OSCE PA.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.
The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the U.S. are currently holding peace negotiations.
Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council’s four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
