2014 was a year of intensification of seismic processes and the most powerful earthquakes in Azerbaijan for the past 15 years, director of the Republican Seismological Service Center of the Azerbaijani National Academy of Sciences Gurban Yetirmishli told reporters Dec. 24.
Yetirmishli said that six earthquakes measuring over 5.0 this year occurred in Azerbaijan in 2014.
He also said that 2014 was a year of increased seismic activity and a large volume of released energy.
“More than 8,000 earthquakes were registered in Azerbaijan in 2014,” Yetirmishli said.
“The earthquake occurred at a great depth,” he said. “The tremors affected a large area, but there was no damage.”
