Russian officials expected to visit Tbilisi in the next few days to negotiate the sale of Georgian State Railway Company.
The Georgian government leased out the country’s railway network to the British Parkfield Investment for 99 years in 2007. According to the terms of leasing, the company had to put three billion dollar of investment in the Georgian railway system within 10 years, but the contract was broken for unknown reasons. The newspapers said Mikhail Saakashvili intended to sell the Georgian State Railway Company and to use the returns of sale for saving of his power. The Georgian State Railway Company’s management denied the reports. There is 1323.9 km railway network in Georgia. It includes 1422 bridges, 32 tunnels, 22 passenger and 114 cargo stations. Totally 15 500 people are working in the railway network of Georgia.
