It is possible to settle the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict only after the withdrawal of Armenian armed forces from Azerbaijan’s occupied lands, the Azerbaijan foreign minister said.
Azerbaijan Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov made the remarks during the meeting with Dejan Sahovic, head of the Task Force for the OSCE Chairmanship of Serbia in 2015 on May 6 in Baku.
Mammadyarov said that the relations between Azerbaijan and Serbia in political, economic and humanitarian spheres are developing successfully, the Azerbaijan Foreign Ministry said.
He added that the two countries have close contacts within international organizations.
Giving brief update about the ongoing negotiations towards the settlement of Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict Minister Elmar Mammadyarov stressed inadmissibility of altering the internationally recognized borders of states by use of force. Furthermore, he added that for the resolution of conflict, first of all, occupying armed forces of Armenia shall be withdrawn from the occupied territories of Azerbaijan and the fact of occupation shall be ceased.
During the meeting, the sides exchanged views on the topical issues on the OSCE agenda.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.
