President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Thomas Bach has received an honorary doctorate from the Azerbaijan State Physical Culture and Sports Academy as he is visiting Baku to attend the 43rd General Assembly of the European Olympic Committees (EOC).
Mr. Bach received a doctor`s diploma and gown from rector of the academy Agajan Abiyev, who said the IOC President was honored for his “tremendous contribution to the development of Olympic movement”.
He highlighted Mr. Bach`s life and sporting career. “Mr. Bach is a German former fencer, and claimed an Olympic gold in 1976 in Montreal.” “He was elected as IOC President in Buenos Aires in 2013.”
Mr. Bach said he was honored to receive a doctorate from the Azerbaijan State Physical Culture and Sports Academy.
The IOC President praised preparatory works for the Baku 2015 European games.
Azerbaijani minister of youth and sports Azad Rahimov, vice president of the National Olympic Committee Chingiz Huseynzade, and former IOC president Jacques Rogge were present at the ceremony.
