The ambassador said Ankara had appealed for non-permanent membership five years before and had done much work during that period.
“At the time when peace and security face great threats in the world, Turkey’s election to the UN Security Council shows the international community’s confidence in our state and friendly feelings towards the Turkish people,” he said.
The diplomat considers that Turkey’s votes (151) show that other countries have great expectations for Turkey.
“Turkey being member of the Security Council will successfully fulfill its duties,” he said.
Underlining that Turkey’s foreign policy was based on Ataturk’s slogan “Peace at home, peace in the world” Hulusi Kilic said Turkey sent soldiers, police and civil observers to the international peacekeeping missions in Asia, Africa, Latin America, the Balkans, Caucasus and Near East. Speaking about Turkey’s contributions to peace, security and cooperation the diplomat also mentioned Turkey-initiated Caucasus Stability and Cooperation Platform that could bring together five countries in the Caucasus.
Answering journalists’ questions, Hulusi Kilic said they would do their best for the implementation of four resolutions of UN Security Council on the occupied Azerbaijani territories.
Asked whether Turkey intended to become permanent member of the UN Security Council the ambassador said:
“The number of permanent members should be increased. Such states as Turkey, Japan and Germany should also join them,” he said.
