“Taking hostage civilians is unacceptable according to the international humanitarian law,” Head of the Working Group of the Azerbaijani State Commission on Prisoners of War, Hostages and Missing Persons Firudin Sadigov said at the conference entitled “The Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict: the world must know the truth” held at Baku State University, APA reports.

He said Armenians took hostage and captured civilians during the Nagorno-Karabakh war. Sadigov noted that about 8 000 people were captured or taken hostages in the first years of war.

“Many of them were released, and the fates of some were clarified. Currently, 4016 people are registered as missing during the conflict. According to the results of investigations, we came to the conclusion that Armenians have captured over 870 people alive. A number of people didn’t flee their homes during the war. People didn’t leave their homes thinking that the Armenians wouldn’t commit such brutality. We informed all international organizations about the fates of these people. However, the Armenians do not accept these facts. We try to keep these issues in the focus of all international organizations,” he added.
