The chairman of the Children’s Organization in Azerbaijan held a special study on suicide among children and teenagers. It was revealed that children’s and teens’ attempt to suicide, in general, may be caused by fear, anger, and desire to punish his parents with his death.

“The study found that children of different ages commit suicidefor different reasons. Thoughts of suicide in a child may be caused by fear, anger and a desire to punish his adults with his death. In some cases, children who have a conflict with teachers and parents due to missing lessons also resort to suicide,” Chairman of the Republican Children’s Organization, and Member of the Azerbaijani Parliament, Gular Ahmadova told Trend News on Sept. 3.

In August 2009, five children committed suicide in Azerbaijan. One suicide occurred in the Azizbayov district of Baku, two – in the Shamkir region, as well as 11- and 12-year-old teens handed in the Lankaran and Kurdamir regions.

A total of 20 suicide cases, including 10 boys and 10 girls were officially recorded in Azerbaijan in 2009.

Ahmadova said young children mostly differ impressionable, impulsive behavior, a critical attitude to themselves and do not adequately perceive any event, as well as easy fall under anyone’s influence.

The study found that the excited-depressive character of children often leads to suicide.

“Sadness, laziness inappropriate for children, lack of sleep and appetite, weight loss, the minimum success in school, lack of confidence in themselves, as well as withdrawal and aggression are the causes of such a depression,” said the parliamentarian.

Ahmadov said children in adolescence have other characteristics, as well. “Suicide attempts among teenagers are more than among the young and only one percent of them ends in death. Teens’ suicide attempt is more effective and has the nature of blackmail,” said the chairman of the children’s organization.

During the investigation, it became clear that the adolescent depression has own peculiarities.

“Thus, the depressive features peculiar to teenagers can be boredom, fatigue, high attention to details, insubordination, disobedience, as well as interest in alcohol and drugs. In general, it should be noted that one of the reasons that stem from attempts to commit suicide, is a violation of interpersonal relationships with parents and peers,” said the chairman of the organization.

Ahmadova said suicide attempts are caused by the factor that teenagers are trying to resemble the ideal, try under the influence of teenage subculture emulate their idols. “For example, young fans, knowing about suicide of favorite singer or actor, may have an idea to repeat this conduct. In this regard, the media should not highlight the details of suicides of famous people,” she said.

The study found that after 14 years, girls and boys tend to commit suicide in the digital meaning to the same extent. “Under this age, suicides are most commonly associated with intimate personal relationships, unhappy love. The facts, such as the refugee problem, and early marriages can be applied to teenagers being in transition period in Azerbaijan,” said Ahmadova.

The parliamentarian called the factor as one of the reasons for the increase in the number of suicides among teenagers that suicide attempts were made by their parents or whether they all died as a result of these efforts. “In general, the views of the family to death suicide, the road map is for every young person. Teenagers should always keep the idea that a person comes into this world and leaves it only by God’s will,” said Ahmadova.
