Honorary President of the Belgian Senate Anne-Marie Lizin has addressed a letter of protest to the President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz, the Council for State Support to NGOs under the auspices of Azerbaijani President told APA on Sept.22.
The letter reads:
“Mr. President Schulz, I would like to share with you my impressions about the work I did toward the protection of women’s rights in Azerbaijan (I have been working in the field of women’s rights for many years), as well as my deep regret over the recent resolution of the European Parliament. The Azerbaijani people want to feel like Europeans, but our steps take them under the influence of Russia.
Together with a group of Azerbaijani women, I read the recent anti-Azerbaijani resolution of the European Parliament. There are different ways to address the problems and issues among partners. Unfortunately, the resolution is biased and wrong. There are numerous problems with the eastern neighbors of the European Union, and such wrong decisions weaken the power of the EU in the region at a time when Russia is increasing its influence in the South Caucus. If we want to achieve positive results, then we must maintain ties with Azerbaijan: we need good dialogue with Azerbaijan and other eastern partners. My friends in Azerbaijan have no relation to the government, they are doing a great work in the field of women’s rights. However, I see that the resolution of the European Parliament has a negative impact on relations between the EU and Azerbaijan. This fact has disappointed many, including those who support closer cooperation with the EU. Such attempts will not produce any positive results. The European Parliament needs to enter into closer dialogue with Azerbaijan, and if we want to achieve concrete results, this process should take place in a constructive manner.”
