Azerbaijani Parliament will debate the law on removing limitation on prosecutor general ‘s appointment

The Azerbaijani Parliament will discuss the amendments and changes to the law on “Prosecutor’s Office” at the next meeting. “The agenda of the meeting scheduled for Oct. 20 will discuss 16 issues,” the parliament told Trend News on Oct. 19.

Under the Article 133 of the Azerbaijani Constitution, the President appoints and dismisses Prosecutor General upon the agreement with the parliament. According to the Article 16 of the law on “Prosecutor’s Office”, the prosecutor general’s office term covers 5 years. One citizen cannot be appointed the same position more than twice.

The current Prosecutor General of Azerbaijan, Zakir Garalov holds this position since April 25, 2000 and his office term will expire on April 25 in 2010. The bill, sent by the President Ilham Aliyev to the parliament upon legislative initiative, includes an item removing limitation on appointment of the prosecutor general, military prosecutor, prosecutor and military prosecutor of Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic (NAR).

The parliamentary meeting will also debate the amendments and changes to the law on “Status of Interior Troops”, “Entrepreneurship activity”, “State duties” and other laws.
