Azerbaijan unveils bid to host 2016 International Canoe Federation Congress

Azerbaijan has officially delivered its bid for the rights to host the 2016 ICF Congress in Warsaw, Poland on Nov. 9.

 

Presenting its case on behalf of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Leyla Aliyeva, Technical Director of the Azerbaijan Rowing and Canoe Federation, addressed delegates of the 2014 International Canoe Federation Congress impressing them with the scale of sporting events and the development of the Sport of Canoe currently taking place in the country.

 

Azerbaijan’s bid focused on how the country is fast becoming a sporting hub having recently begun cementing its reputation as a European Destination for sporting events. It named the inaugural European Games 2015, the Formula One Grand Prix of Europe 2016, the Islamic Games 2017 and the UEFA 2020 quarter finals as just a selection of the International Sporting Events Baku and Azerbaijan has recently been chosen as hosts.

 

The bid then went on to outline the history of the Sport of Canoe in the country and detailed how the sport is being developed with the creation of the centre of excellence in Mingachevir which notably will also be host to the Sprint Canoe event during the European Games.

 

Minster for Youth and Sport, Azad Rahimov, included a letter of guarantee which pledged the Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan’s commitment to the hosting of the 2016 ICF Congress which would ensure it was organised to the highest possible standards, with an enviable social programme, tourist and cultural opportunities for guests as well as optimal climatic conditions.

 

Mrs. Aliyeva concluded the bid by saying that Azerbaijan would be proud to be afforded this opportunity and that the Canoe family would benefit greatly by making an impact worldwide in choosing this innovative and exiting destination as hosts of the 2016 ICF Congress.
