Azerenergy JSC (production and distribution of electricity in Azerbaijan) is to complete construction work on the second Combined Cycle Unit at the Shimal power plant in Baku by late 2014, JSC told Trend on Feb.3.

Shimal power plant plays an important role in the energy supply of the Absheron peninsular.

“Currently, work on the construction of a second power unit is vigorously continuing. All efforts are aimed at implementation of this large JSC project at the moment. It is planned to commission the new facility within the year,” Azerenergy said.

The construction of the second combined cycle unit with a capacity of 409 megawatts at the Shimal power plant is of great significance for strengthening energy security at the Absheron peninsular.

Currently the power plant meets a quarter of electricity demand in Baku and Absheron. With the construction of the second unit this figure will amount to 35-40 percent. The construction of the second power unit is being carried out on the basis of an agreement signed with the Japanese Toyo Engineering Company.

Currently, Shimal power plant has one combined cycle unit with a capacity of 400 megawatts.
