The Permanent Mission of Azerbaijan to the United Nations has sent a letter to the organization’s secretary general over the shelling by Armenian armed forces in the occupied Azerbaijani territories of a wedding ceremony held in the Gapanli village of Terter district.
The letter was made public official document A/69/1028-S/2015/704 of the UN General Assembly and the Security Council, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry told APA on Oct.13.
The letters notes that three civilians, including a child, were injured as Armenian armed forces, stationed in the occupied Azerbaijani territories, opened fire at a wedding ceremony held in the Gapanli village of Terter on September 1, 2015.
Armenia’s shelling of the wedding ceremony and targeting of civilians is a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law and a war crime according to international criminal law, says the document.
The letter mentions that it was not the first time of the Armenians targeting civilians, noting that during the aggression against Azerbaijan, the Armenians have taken hostage and massacred Azerbaijani civilians, tortured captives and hostages and carried out numerous crimes like ethnic cleansing in the occupied areas. In this regard, the document mentions the merciless massacre of the civilian population of Khojaly town.
According to the letter, such crimes are not accidental but are a part of an Armenian systematic policy which is based on racial and ethnic discrimination, and hatred and occupation of territories.
“Regular violations of ceasefire and the continuation of armed attacks on Azerbaijani civilians clearly show Armenia’s disinterest in a peaceful resolution of the conflict. The true goal of Armenia is to continue the occupation of Azerbaijani territories and maintain the status quo by all means,” said the letter.
“Despite the facts that the protection of the civilian population is constantly on the agenda of the UN Security Council and the international community make constant attempts to decrease the number of massacres, Armenia continues ignoring its obligations and pursues a policy of killing civilians. This must be ended,” said the letter.
According to the letter, Azerbaijan urges the UN Security Council to take decisive measures to put an end to the continuing occupation of Azerbaijani territories by Armenia and its impunity.
