First Deputy Speaker of the Azerbaijani Parliament Ziyafat Asgarov has today met a delegation of the upper house of the Afghan National Assembly led by head of the parliamentary Commission for External Relations Nisar Ahmad Harris to discuss prospects for the relations between the two countries.

Asgarov noted Azerbaijan would continue supporting socio-economic development in Afghanistan.

He praised Afghanistan`s supporting Azerbaijan`s UN Security Council membership bid and adopting a resolution backing Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity at a session of the UN General Assembly.

Ahmad Harris said the Afghan delegation held several fruitful meetings in Baku.

He noted their visit aimed to earn support for an initiative to hold a parliamentary conference in Kabul, adding it will seek to contribute to increasing the effectiveness of the fight against terrorism, illegal drug trafficking and religious fundamentalism, and ensuring regional security and stability in the region.

He said “fraternal and friendly” Azerbaijan was the first country they visited to win backing for the initiative.

Ahmad Harris lauded Azerbaijan’s assistance in solving the problems Afghanistan had faced.

Asgarov said Azerbaijan “is handling such matters sensitively as we also suffer from the Armenian terrorism and have 20 per cent of our lands under the Armenian occupation”.

“So combating the narcotics trafficking is one of the key priorities in Azerbaijan’s policy,” he added.
