An Armenian sabotage and intelligence group has attempted to attack one of the posts of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces located in Fizuli region, the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry told Trend on May 22.

Thanks to the vigilance, valor and bravery of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces’ units, the enemy’s attempt was revealed and strongly suppressed. After a brief firefight, the enemy was forced to retreat suffering losses.

Ensign Asif Mammadov, soldiers, Tural Isagov and Mirza Mirzali who were slightly injured as a result of the shooting, were hospitalized.

The health condition of the servicemen is stable and their lives are not threatened.

The Azerbaijani Armed Forces fully control the situation in the territory where the sabotage attempt took place.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the U.S. are currently holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council’s four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
