Azerbaijani Defense Minister, Colonel-General Zakir Hasanov attended a meeting of the Council of Defense Ministers of the CIS member-states as part of his Nov. 11 visit to Moscow, the Azerbaijani defense ministry told Trend Nov. 11.
During the visit Hasanov met with the defense ministers of several countries, discussed regional issues and signed the military cooperation plans. Moreover, the experience in the development of the armed forces was exchanged as part of the meetings.
The Council of Defense Ministers of the Commonwealth of Independent States was formed in 1992. It consists of the representatives of Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Moldova, Turkmenistan and Ukraine actively participate in the CIS Council of Defense Ministers.
The Council coordinates the military cooperation of the CIS countries. It considers the conceptual approaches to the military policy and military construction. It works out the proposals for making efforts to prevent armed conflicts. The Council also considers the draft contracts and other documents on defense and military construction. It works out the proposals concerning the regulations in this area. It guides the Collective Peacekeeping Forces in the CIS area.
