Russian President Dmitriy Medvedev’s visit to Azerbaijan starts today

On Thursday Russian President Dmitriy Medvedev arrives in Azerbaijan for the official visit. Aide to the Russian President Sergei Prikhodko announced the schedule of the visit of the head of state, APA reports. Dmitriy Medvedev scheduled to hold tete-a-tete meeting with the Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev within the two-day visit, APA reports.

The meeting will be developed with the participation of the delegations afterwards. Following the negotiations, a number of intergovernmental documents on cooperation in the various fields are going to be signed between Azerbaijan and Russia. The Russian President will discuss the prospects of cooperation between the two countries during his meetings in Azerbaijan. Prikhodko said the international legal status of the Caspian Sea and its security would be discussed at the meetings.

He didn’t rule out the discussions over the Iranian problem. The presidents will also exchange opinions on the Nagorno Karabakh problem. Dmitriy Medvedev will also visit the Alley of Honor and Alley of Martyrs and will meet with the leaders of religious confessions functioning in Azerbaijan and familiarize himself with the Heydar Aliyev Foundation. Prikhodko said at the end of the negotiations the two presidents expected to sign the Declaration on Friendship and Strategic Partnership between Russian Federation and Azerbaijan Republic, as well as documents on cooperation between the ministries of foreign and internal affairs and cooperation in the property and customs fields are also going to be signed.

Special attention will be paid to the relations between the confessions at the meeting with the heads of religious confessions and the role of Islam in the world religions and cooperation between the government and religion in combating the global terrorism will be discussed at the meeting. During his visit, the Russian President will be accompanied by the foreign, interior and energy ministers, as well as heads of regional administrations of Russia, Federal Customs Service and Federal Agency of the State Property Management. The heads of LUKOIL, Gasprom, Alfa-Bank, Vneshtorgbank, and Russian Railways are also the parts of delegation. Dmitriy Medvedev will leave Baku for Ashgabad and then he will visit Astana and Tokyo.
