New President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) has been elected today. APA’s Europe correspondent reports that 165 voted for, 125 against Anne Brasseur (Luxembourg, ALDE).

Brasseur won having defeated former leader of the European Democrat Group Robert Walter, who ran as an independent candidate.

64-year old Anne Brasseur was the chairperson of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe Group and she was nominated to this position by her group members in October, 2013. Candidates are nominated by the political factions in PACE and according to the “gentlemen’s agreement” basing on the rotation principle reached by political groups this time it was the turn of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe Group led by Anne Brasseur.

Anne Brasseur is a member of the Luxembourgian Parliament and represents the Democratic Party of Luxembourg. She has been working at PACE under the Luxembourgian delegation since 2009. Anne Brasseur will hold this post by January, 2016 with the mandate to be updated in 2015.
