Armenia deliberately escalates situation on frontline

On Nov. 2 night, the Armenian armed units again opened fire at Azerbaijani positions in the north-west direction of the frontline using 60-mm mortars, grenade launchers and heavy machine guns, the press service of Azerbaijan’s Defense Ministry reported.

The enemy was silenced with return fire, according to the ministry.

Azerbaijani Defense Ministry stated that criminal military and political regime of Armenia is fully responsible for the deliberate escalation of the situation on the contact line of the two countries’ troops.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts. The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
