European Parliament says will respect Azerbaijan’s referendum results

The European Parliament will respect the results of the upcoming referendum in Azerbaijan, EP Vice-President Ryszard Czarnecki told reporters in Baku Sept. 9.

Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev earlier signed an order to hold a referendum on making amendments to the country’s Constitution on Sept. 26, 2016.

“We are here before the important referendum in your country. We have more information about this referendum,” Czarnecki told reporters.

“We will respect the result of this referendum. Because for us the will of your nation is the most important,” he added.

Czarnecki expresses satisfaction with his visit to Azerbaijan.

“I’m here at the invitation of Gudrat Hasanguliyev, chairman of the Whole Azerbaijani Popular Front Party, which is our political partner in Azerbaijan. This is my twelfth visit to Azerbaijan,” he said.

“Today we met with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and several officials,” the EP vice-president added.

He also stressed the importance of close cooperation between the European Parliament and Azerbaijan not only in the economic sphere but also other areas.

He also noted that this visit is especially important, because Italian and Polish representatives of the European Parliament delegation are in Azerbaijan for the first time.

“They have lack of experience, and for them these meetings and this trip was the first lesson of Azerbaijani culture, history and politics,” Czarnecki said.
