The Azerbaijan Parliament has today discussed the bill on annexes and amendments to the Law on “Citizenship of the President of the Azerbaijan Republic”.
According to the bill submitted by the president, the rules of restoring and renouncing Azerbaijani citizenship are being changed.
According to the amendments, the following amendment is added to articles 15 (restoration) and 17 (renunciation): “The decision on the restoration or renunciation of the citizenship of the Republic of Azerbaijan is added to Paragraph 20 of Article 109 of the Constitution of the Republic of Azerbaijan”.
Note that, Article 109 is called “Competence of the President of the Azerbaijan Republic” and its Paragraph 20 includes “settles questions concerning citizenship” among presidential powers. The bill also envisages the abolition of the second part (as a result of losing Azerbaijani citizenship) of the law’s Article 16 (grounds for the termination of Azerbaijani citizenship). Furthermore, rules for loss based on a court verdict are added to Article 18. The bill was put up for discussion and approved.
