State Border Service: 30 Azerbaijani citizens involved in fights abroad detained

This year 423 people have been detained for trespassing Azerbaijan’s state borders, 16,002 for violating border regime.

 

This was announced at the report conference of State Border Service (SBS) on the results of service and fighting activities in 2014, APA reports.

 

Among the detainees, 46.1 percent are Azerbaijani citizens, 18.7% Uzbekistani, 6.4% Iranian, 4.5% Moldovan, 4.3% Afghan, 3.8% Turkish, 3.1% Georgian, 2.6% Russian, 2.6% Syrian, 1.9% Nigerian, 1.9% Ukrainian, and 4.1% citizens of other countries.

 

It was noted that during the reporting period, trespassers used fire-arms against the border guards in three occasions. Two Iranian citizens died as the border guards used a gun defined by the instructions in retaliation, an SBS officer was wounded.

 

2,553 wanted persons were detained in 2014. 272 were detained while trying to cross border checkpoints with a fake document, 43 with documents of others, and 10 were detained while attempting to cross the border secretly.

 

In 2014, smuggled property valued at AZN 9,406,000 was seized. 317,715 kilograms of drug smuggling were prevented. 26.7 tons of wild drug plants were seized and destroyed.

 

Thanks to the strengthening of state border through operational and technical ways, relevant measures were taken against 7 Azerbaijani and 2 foreign citizens accused of having ties with foreign special service agencies to engage in intelligence and subversive activities against Azerbaijan as well as another Azerbaijani citizen serving secret forces. As a result of counter-terrorism measures, 30 Azerbaijani citizens who fought in conflict zones abroad were detained, 4 groups engaged in illegal migration and 15 organized criminal groups engaged in drug trafficking were rendered harmless.

 

In order to control the border regime of the Caspian Sea 53 ships of Azerbaijan, 28 of Russia, 8 of Iran, 3 of Kazakhstan, as well as 404 small ships of Azerbaijan were inspected. Necessary measures were taken against 27 ships of Azerbaijan, 3 of Russia, 3 of Iran, one of Kazakhstan, 254 boats of Azerbaijan, including 418-member crew. During the reporting period, the SBS Coast Guard conducted two rescue operations in the sea, rescuing 5 persons. As a result of the measures taken in boundary waters, fishing equipment, including 26,002 meters fishnet posing threat to ships and impeding the execution of service duties were removed.
