It has been proved that 4,859 people have been infected with HIV in Azerbaijan, from 1987, when the HIV was first revealed, to December 1, 2014, Director of Republic Center of the Struggle against AIDS Esmira Almammadova said at today’s press conference, APA reports.
According to her, 4,694 (96.7%) of those persons are Azerbaijani citizens and 165 (3.4%) – foreigners. 3,572 (76.1%) of HIV-infected people are men, 1,122 (23.9%) – women. “The number of persons at the phase of AIDS is 1,508, while 1,484 of them are Azerbaijani citizens. In this period 667 died from HIV infection”, she said.
She said since November 1, 1,992, most of HIV-infected people are infected with HIV through injection drug use. Thus, 2,578 (54.9%) out of 4,694 people have been infected with HIV through injection drug use, 1,637 (34.9%) heterosexual contact, 82 (1.7%) mother-to-child, 61 (1.3%) homosexual contact and 1 (0.02%) blood transfusion.
Almammadova noted that 1,198 (25.5%) of HIV-infected patients are registered in Baku and Absheron district, 3,656 (73.7) in 55 administrative districts. Place of residence of 38 HIV-infected (0.8%) patients is unknown.
She added that 561 HIV-infected people were revealed in Azerbaijan over 11 months of this year. 545 (97.1%) of them are Azerbaijani citizens, 16 (2.9%) – foreigners. 336 (61.7%) of the Azerbaijani citizens are men, 209 (38.3%) – women.
