Today throughout the PACE plenary meeting, the election for the post of Secretary General of the Council of Europe will be held. APA’s European bureau reports that the result of the election will be made public by the end of the plenary meeting tonight.
Members of the assembly will have to make a decision between two candidates. One of the candidates is current CoE Secretary General, former Norwegian PM Thorbjørn Jagland and the other is former Minister of Justice of Germany, Mrs Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger. The winner will be determined with a majority of votes (50+1). If both candidates gain the same number of votes, then the 2nd round will be held during the assembly’s next plenary meeting tomorrow.
