The summit of heads of state and government of the participating states of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA) will be held in May 2014 in Shanghai.

The current CICA CiO Turkey will hand over the CICA Chairmanship to China during the summit meeting, TURKPA reported.

TURKPA Secretary General Jandos Asanov received the delegation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China led by Deputy Director of Department of European and Central Asian Affairs Foreign Ministry Mr. Su Fangqiu on 6 March.

The Chinese delegation arrived in Azerbaijan to discuss the issues relating to the upcoming summit.

The idea on convening a conference that deal with creation of pan-Asian security structure for the first time was proposed by Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev, on 5 October 1992, at the 47th Session of the United Nations General Assembly. The moving spirit behind this initiative was the aspiration to set up an efficient and acceptable structure for ensuring peace and security in Asia.

Asanov, who used to be the first Executive Director of CICA in 2006-2008, said that the past time has proven the far-sightedness and timeliness of the idea of the President of Kazakhstan.

Currently CICA has established itself as unique international platform, which brings together more than twenty Asian countries and carries out confidence and security building measures in various areas. The regular activities of CICA have enabled accumulation of substantial experts’ potential that paves way to construction in future a security structure that covers all the parts of Asia.

TURKPA Secretary General expressed his confidence that under the incoming Chinese Chairmanship CICA will make a significant progress towards shared goals and objectives.

It should be noted that TURKPA participates as an observer in the activities of CICA since 2012 and is expected to attend the CICA Summit on May.
