Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone struck a deal to take Formula One to Azerbaijan, British newspaper, The Guardian reported on March 5.
“It is early to talk about signing a contract,” Azerbaijani Youth and Sports Azad Rahimov told the media on March 4. “Almost all stages on signing the agreement are completed, but the agreement has not been signed yet. A company, Baku Grand Prix, which officially works on this issue, was established for this project.
“The Grand Prix will be held in Azerbaijan in 2015 or 2016,” Ecclestone said.
“We will visit Azerbaijan,” he said. “People talk about the race in 2015. Perhaps, it is too early, but there is still an opportunity. However, the race is likely to be held in 2016.”
The championship calendar consists of 19 races. In the future, it is expected to increase to 22 races per year. Besides Azerbaijan, Thailand, South Africa, Greece, Argentina and Mexico also claim being included in the calendar.
