Metropolitan Kirill of Smolensk and Kaliningrad was chosen patriarch of Moscow and all Russia.
APA reports that in the voting held in Pomestni church 508 voted for Metropolitan Kirill and 169 for Clement, Metropolitan of Kaluga and Borovsk, Chancellor of the Moscow Patriarchate.
Metropolitan Kirill is the 16th patriarch of Russian Orthodox Church. He will succeed Patriarch Alexy II, who died at the age of 79 on December 5, 2008. Patriarchs are elected for the life term.
